Slowness in migrating content to site using Metalogix Content Matrix

Hi,

We would like to ask what are the common causes why there is inconsistency on the speed of migration. For a 5 mb site, sometimes it took 30 mins, sometimes it took 1hr, and there are also times it takes about 6 hrs for a small site content. Can you please help share thoughts about this.

Also is there a way, a configuration or something to be done on Metalogix to speed up migration process. Please advise. THanks so much for the help.

Regards,

-Bryan

  • Hi Bryan,

    That is definitely slow performance. There are a number of performance enhancements, particularly for copying to SharePoint Online. Example, using the Azure pipeline, using OAuth authentication to avoid throttling.

    Included in your Content Matrix download is our Performance Guide, a pdf file which you can reference.

    What are your source and target SharePoint versions?

    Also, what are your source and target connection adapters used?

    Cheers,

    Theo

  • Hi Theo,

    Actually we are testing migration from SP online to SP online, and the other is onpremise to SP online. Mostly, the slow performance happens when we do migration from SP Online to SP online sites. For the adapter info as seen on config powershell script:

    UnderlyingAdapterType=`"`"

    AdapterType=`"CSOM`"

    AuthenticationType=`"Metalogix.SharePoint.Adapters.CSOM2013.Authentication.Office365StandADFSInitializer`"

    Was there any other adapter we can use for enhancing the migration speed performance. Please advise. Your response is highly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    - Bryan

  • Thanks Bryan.

    The CSOM adapter is a slow adapter in general.

    One recommendation is to use the Azure options on the List Content Options tab of the paste menu, which can improve performance significantly.

    Lists or Libraries with large numbers of Items and metadata columns can slow performance down considerably.

    Also, to run migration jobs to SPO outside of normal business hours, as Microsoft is currently implementing network throttling during the pandemic.

    But overall, as I mentioned, out best practices are included in the pdf document as part of the Content Matrix download.

    If you still experience performance problems, I recommend calling into the customer care and opening a Service Request, so a support rep can look at your environment, logging and configuration closer to investigate a root cause.

    Cheers,

    Theo
