I have tried connecting both a windows auth and an FBA site.

I have version 8.5.0.2418 installed.

Here is the error: (Error: An error occurred during the operation of a service method: Could not connect to remote SharePoint server: 'https://xxx.com'. The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. Type: Metalogix.SharePoint.Adapters.ServiceError).

I would recommend reviewing this article for the error message you are receiving.
